Bladder wrack - Bladder wrack is a seaweed found on the coasts of the North Sea, the western Baltic Sea, and the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It was the original source of iodine, discovered in 1812, and was used extensively to treat goiter, a swelling of the thyroid gland related to iodine deficiency.
Goitre - A goitre (or goiter) (Latin struma) is a swelling in the neck (just below adam's apple or larynx) due to an enlarged thyroid gland. They are classified in different ways:
Thyroid nodule - A thyroid nodule is a swelling that develops in the thyroid gland. It can be due to growth of thyroid cells or a collection of fluid known as a cyst.
Thyroid peroxidase - Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme ( mainly expressed in the thyroid that liberates iodine for addition onto tyrosine residues on thyroglobulin for the production of thyroxine (thyroid hormone). This process is termed the "organification of iodine".
