William de Taillebois - The first person to bear the name of Lancaster, of whom we have any record, was William de Taillebois, Baron of Kendal, the governor of Lancaster Castle in the reign of Henry II, about 1180, who assumed the surname of Lancaster and dropped "de Taillebois." William de Taillebois was a descendant of Ivo de Taillebois, who went to England about the time of William the Conqueror, and the supposition is that he is the ancestor of all persons bearing the name of Lancaster.
